The Hengst Family

Janelle's father, Kenneth James Henry Taylor, was the son of Austin James Taylor, and Bessie May Einsig.

Austin was born to James Kenneth Tayor and Emma Jane Hengst.

Austin was born to an early Colonial Pennsylvania Philip Taylor family.

Melchior Johann Hengst (1732-1802)

Melchior Johann Hengst was born about 1732 in the Palatinate region of Germany. He immigrated on the ship named Ann, which arrived at the Philadelphia port on September 28th 1749.

Melchior went by the name Michael. He married about 1753 to Maria Catherine Meckele, who was born about 1735 in Elsheim, located in the Rhineland Palatinate region of Germany.

-- Maria’s father was Christian Meckele who was born about 1700 in Elsheim, located in the Rhineland Palatinate region of Germany. Christian died about 1764 in York County Pennsylvania. Christian also was the father to a son named Christian, who was born about 1740 in Elsheim, located in the Rhineland Palatinate region of Germany.


Melchior died March 1802 in York County, Pennsylvania. His will was signed July 4th 1801, and probated March 8th 1802. His son, Michael, was the executor. Melchior’s wife, Maria, was not mentioned in his will, and may have died prior to 1801, when Michael’s will was signed.

Michael and Maria Hengst’s children were all born in York County, Pennsylvania. The following were the only children listed in Michael’s will.

i. Catherine Hengst was born about 1756. She married Mr. Vandermullen.

ii. Christian Hengst was born February 28th 1758, and baptized April 2nd 1758. Died prior to 1801.

iii. Jacob Hengst was born about 1765.

iv. Margaret Hengst was born January 24th 1760. She married Godfrey Kleindrenst.

v. Anna Margaret Hengst was born May 11th 1761.

vi. Eva Hengst was born about 1763. She married George Philips.

vii. Michael Hengst (1771-1834). He married Juliana Harbaugh.

viii. Elizabeth Hengst was born August 19th 1775. She married George Wolf.

ix. John Hengst was born about 1776, and baptized February 9th 1777. Died prior to the 1801.


Michael Hengst (1771-1834)

Michael Hengst was born February 6th 1771 to Melchior Johann Hengst and Maria Catherine Meckele in York County.

Michael married about 1792 to Juliana Harbaugh (Herbach). She was born March 30th 1772 to John Harbaugh and Maria Christina Elisabeth Mehl in York County.

-- The will of John Herbach is dated November 26th 1802 and was probated (proven) on February 6th 1803. The executors were George Herbach (oldest son) and Michael Hengst of York County.


Michael and Juliana lived most of their life in the area of Delroy borough, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

Michael died September 2nd 1834 and was laid to rest in Salem Cemetery in Lower Windsor Township, York County Pennsylvania.

Juliana died July 19th 1852 in Chockley, York County Pennsylvania.

Michael and Juliana Hengst's children were all born in Delroy borough, Lower Windsor Township, York County.

i. Daniel Hengst was born September 30th 1793, and baptized November 3rd 1793. ii. Johannes (John) Hengst was born February 8th 1795, and baptized April 5th 1795. He married Catherine Winters, who was born December 13th 1802. John died August 27th 1826, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Catherine died August 10th 1881, and was laid next to her husband.

iii. Jacob Hengst was born December 13th 1796.

iv. Michael Hengst was born February 11th 1798, a twin with Juliana. He married Elizabeth Klinefelter, who was born in 1803. Michael died February 17th 1848, and was laid to rest at the New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery (Also known as Fissels Cemetery), Glen Rock, York County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth died April 26th 1877, and was laid to rest with her husband.

v. Juliana Hengst was born February 11th 1798, a twin with Michael. She married Jacob Heindel. Juliana died May 6th 1887, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

vi. Samuel Hengst was born September 3rd 1800. He married Barbara, who was 71 years and 7 months old when she died November 25th 1871, and was laid next to her husband. Samuel died January 28th 1884, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

vii. George Hengst was born May 8th 1802.

viii. Mary Hengst was born March 25th 1804.

ix. Zachariah Hengst was born March 9th 1805. He married Catherine Wanbach, who was born December 13th 1802. Zachariah died June 4th 1845, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania. Catherine died August 10th 1881, and was laid to rest with her husband.

x. Benjamin Hengst was born April 15th 1807, and baptized May 7th 1807. He married Sussanna Keller, who was born November 13th 1803. Sussanna died Feburary 11th 1885, and was laid to rest with her husband. Benjamin died October 25th 1888, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

xi. David Hengst was born June 25th 1809.

xii. Elisabeth Hengst was born August 11th 1811. She married Barshinger. She died May 12th 1859, and was laid to rest at the Canadochly Church Cemetery, located near the small village of Yorkanna, Lower Windsor Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

xiii. Joseph Hengst was born October 17th 1814. He married Sarah Conway.

Joseph Hengst was born November 11th 1814 to Michael Hengst and Juliana Harbaugh in Delroy borough, Lower Windsor Township York County Pennsylvania.

Joseph married Sarah Conoway who was born November 26th 1818 in Ireland.

Sarah died March 2nd 1890, and was laid to rest at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, Pennsylvania.

Joseph died April 19th 1899, and was laid to rest at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, York Township, York County Pennsylvania.

Joseph and Sara had the following children who were born in Jacobus, Springfield Township, York County Pennsylvania.

i. Henry C. Hengst (1838-1909). He married Priscilla Ness.

ii. Amos Hengst was born November 2nd 1840.

iii. Leah C. Hengst was born May 1st 1843. She married Mr. Hildebrand and they lived at 309 West Main Street in Dallastown, York County Pennsylvania. She was an 85-year-old widow when she died on May 31st 1928 in Dallastown York County Pennsylvania. Leah was laid to rest June 4th at the Salem Union Cemetery in Jacobus York County. Charles H. Hildebrand was the informant on Leah’s death certificate.

iv. John A. Hengst (1844-1925). He married Fianna Knaub.

v. Levi Hengst was born May 15th 1849. He was a carpenter. Levi was still married when he died March 15th 1913. He was laid to rest at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, Pennsylvania. L. P. Hengst of R. D. #2 York, was the informant on Levi’s death certificate.

vi. Jacob Franklin Hengst was born April 1st 1852. He also went by the name Franklin, and was a farmer. He was a widower when he died in York on March 17th 1926. Jacob was laid to rest March 21st at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, Pennsylvania. Frank C. Hengst, of R. D. #2, was the informant on Franklin’s death certificate.

vii. Benjamin Franklin Hengst was born July 9th 1862. He married Annie Dietz. They had a son George Hengst Sr. who married Annie Meyers. George Sr. and Annie had a son, George Hengst Jr. who married Gloria Ryer.

Ben was still married when he died March 4th 1926 in York. He was laid to rest March 7th at the Christ United Methodist Cemetery, (E.U. Cemetery) in Jacobus. B. F. Hengst of 610 N. Witer Street in York, was the informant on Benjamin’s death certificate.

viii. William Hengst was born in July 5th 1858. He was a farmer, and lived in the rural rout area of York, York County Pennsylvania. William was an 89-year-old widower when he died January 27th 1948. He was laid to rest at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, 2523 Pine Grove Road, York, Pennsylvania. Clinton Hengst of Jacobus York county was the informant on William’s death certificate.


John A. Hengst (1844-1925)

John A. Hengst was born November 16th 1844 to Joseph Hengst and Sarah Conway in Springfield Township, York County Pennsylvania. John was a farmer, and farmed in both the Springfield and York Townships of York County Pennsylvania.

John was living in York Township when he married Fianna Knaub from Springfield Township on October 28th 1866 by Rev. Constantine J Deininger.

Fianna was born January 1st 1846 to Henry Knaub and Elisabeth Neff. Fianna’s father, Henry Knaub, was born about 1825 in Pennsylvania, and her mother, Elisabeth Neff, was born in Pennsylvania about 1810. Both Henry and Elisabeth’s parents were also born in Pennsylvania, circa late 18th century. Henry Knaub was a farmer in both the Springfield and York Townships of York County Pennsylvania.

In 1870 John and his wife Fianna were living next to John’s parents, Joseph and Sarah Hengst, in York Township, York County Pennsylvania.

In 1880 John and Fianna Hengst’s daughter, Emma Jane Hengst, was working as a servant in the home of Benjamin and Sarah Horn, in Spring Garden Township York County. At the time John and Fianna, and their other children were living on Springfield Township, York County Pennsylvania.

In 1900 the family lived on West Main Street, York Pennsylvania. At the time John listed his occupation as a day laborer.

Fianna was 77 years old when she died February 18th 1923 in York, York County Pennsylvania. She was laid to rest in February 21st in the Union Cemetery, Dallastown, York County. C. O. Smuck of Bedford Pennsylvania was the informant on Fianna’s death certificate.

John was 80 years old when he died April 12th 1925 in York, York County. He was laid to rest April 15th in the Union Cemetery, Dallastown, York County. Mr. Wm. Hengst of R.D. 2 York was the informant on John’s death certificate.

John Hengst and Fianna Knaub had the following children, who were all born in Springfield Township York County Pennsylvania. According to the 1900 census record, Fianna had 9 children, and 8 were still living. All the children were born in Springfield Township York County Pennsylvania.

i. Emma Jane Hengst was born May 10th 1867. She married James Kenneth Taylor.

ii. Lillian Etta Hengst was born March 18th 1869. She married Jacob V. Kreidler.

iii. Alpheus Theodore Hengst was born April 5th 1871. He married Nora.

iv. Milton Henry Hengst was born September 12th 1874. He married Anna Mary Trout.

v. Ida May Hengst was born October 11th 1877. Ida married (Raymond) Eberly.

vi. Urben Joseph Hengst was born February 24th 1879. He married Lottie May Shearer

vii. John A. Hengst was born February 6th 1883. Died prior to the 1900.

viii. William Edward Hengst was born July 5th 1885.

ix. Matilda Lucrita Hengst was born January 2nd 1887.
