Henry Hines Families

-- Janelle's 2nd great grandparents were Henry Hines and Elizabeth Pyle.

-- Here is Henry's research paper, and the family directory.

Henry Hines was born April 20th 1814 in Pennsylvania. Henry may have been previously married, to whom he had a daughter named Catherine.

-- In Henry’s 1850 will, Catherine was identified as a child of Henry’s, but not in the same context as his wife Elizabeth and his two children with Elizabeth.

-- Catherine was awarded $20.00, with no mention to being a minor. She is most likely at least 14-18 years old (b. 1832-1836).

-- In 1840 Henry’s 2nd wife, Elizabeth Pyle, was living with her parents.

Henry married Elizabeth Pyle about 1843. Elizabeth was born August 22nd 1814 to Philip Pyle and Margaretha Wilkerson in the city of Lancaster Pennsylvania. Philip Pyle was a prominent distiller in Lancaster. Philip was born in Maryland and his wife was born in Virginia.

Both Henry and Elizabeth could read and write. Henry worked as a drover, and was in business with a Mr. Hertzler; known as Hertzler & Hines. In 1850 John and Eliza lived in the North East Ward of Lancaster, Lancaster County Pennsylvania. The real estate they owned was valued at $5,500.00. Living with them was one year old Henry H. and five year old Lucrecia Clay Hines.

Henry made out a will on July 24th 1850. In the will Henry 1st identified a daughter Catherine who was bequeathed $20.00. The will then went on to identified his wife Elizabeth and two children Lucretia Clay, and Henry H. The will also mentions twice; “…my youngest child…” but never mentions which child is the youngest child.

Henry was about 40 years old when he died ten months after his will was created on May 31st 1851. He was laid to rest in Plot:549 of the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth was bequeathed Henry’s real estate and personal property. In Henry’s estate inventory, his goods and chattels were appraised at $2,033.88. Besides house hold furniture, Haney was owed $500.00 from Margaret Markly, $96.13 from Henry S. Shenk, and $150.00 from John Hertzler. Henry also owned $399.96 worth of shares in the Phoenix Line of Cars, $260.00 worth of shares in the Lancaster Bank. He also had $20.00 cash on hand, and $390.20 in the Lancaster Bank. Henry also owed money to the firm of Hertzler & Hines.

Elizabeth then married Andrew Bear on July 25th 1853 at the Lancaster Moravian Church in Lancaster. Andrew was born to Andrew Bear and Elizabeth Sowers.

At the time of their marriage Andrew was operating a Tavern and Inn, known as the Fulton House, on the railroad in the north-west ward of Lancaster.

Then in the April 1854 Quarter Sessions of the Lancaster Court, Andrew petitioned the court to be licensed to operate the Tavern and Inn.

-- Elizabeth’s father, Philip Pyle, was a signer on Andrew Bear’s 1854 liquor license petition.

-- Elizabeth and Andrew had one daughter together, Leila W. Bear. Soon after her Leila’s birth, her father Andrew died December 18th 1854 in Lancaster. He was 54 years, 9 months, and 5 days old when he died. Andrew was laid to rest in the Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster Pennsylvania.

-- Elizabeth petitioned the Lancaster County Register of Wills to permit her to renounce herself as administrator of Andrew’s estate, and grant the administration to William L. Baer of Warwick Township York County.

-- Elizabeth then married a 3rd time to James C. Ewing on December 22nd 1859 in Lancaster Pennsylvania. James Campbell Ewing was born November 13th 1810 in Pennsylvania. In 1850 James was a farmer and owned real estate valued at $8,750.00 in Little Britain Township Lancaster County.

-- James 1st married Mary C. Gryder on February 15th 1833 in Little Britain Township Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Mary died November 5th 1855, leaving four children; Eliza, Thomas, Emma, and Henry Clay. She was laid to rest at the Little Britain Presbyterian Cemetery, Peach Bottom Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

By June 11th 1860 Eliza and James were living in the North East Ward of Lancaster. His occupation was listed as gentleman, and he had a personal estate of $300.00. The real estate, most likely Elizabeth’s from her 1st husband Henry, was valued at $9,000.00. Living with James and Eliza Ewing was Lucretia C. Hines, Henry H. Hines, Emma J. Hines, and Eliza A. Hines.

The marriage between Elizabeth and James didn’t last long, and James left Elizabeth on December 10th 1867. Elizabeth then filed for a divorce. By 1870 Elizabeth was living in the 6th ward of Lancaster with her daughter Eliza A. Baer. The census record also recorded that Elizabeth’s father was of a foreign birth, but not her mother. James had moved back to and moved back to Little Britain Lancaster County.

-- James died May 20th 1877, and was laid to rest at the Little Britain Presbyterian Cemetery, Peach Bottom Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

By 1880 Elizabeth was a widow living at 357 North Queen Street in the 6th ward of Lancaster. Living with her was her son Harry Hines, and Leilia W. Bear, who was identified as Elizabeth’s daughter. Harry was identified as being married and a dealer in carriages.

-- Here is the Harry L. Hines research paper, and the family directory.

Harry L. Hines was born was born in August 1848 to Harry Hines and Elizabeth Pyle in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Harry had a very colorful early life.

-- Read his full research paper, for the full story.

In 1861, at barely 13 years old, Harry and a friend George W. Gerber, who also lived in the same North-East Ward of Lancaster as Harry, “...were wayward boys, giving parents, neighbors and police a great deal of trouble…”

In September 1861 both boys left their home in Lancaster Pennsylvania, to Hatters North Carolina where they attached themselves to the 20th Indiana Infantry regiment. Both boys were taken prisoners with the 20th Indiana Regiment by rebel forces at Chieamaoomak.

-- “…Gerber is fifteen years old, and was Colonel’s “boy”, Hines sixteen years old, acting as Captain’s “boy”…Both can be well spared from this region, and we hope their experience in war, will make them wiser and better boys than they have heretofore been…”

Harry Hines and George W. Gerber most likely joined the 20th Indiana Regiment while the regiment was in the Baltimore Maryland area. Harry was captured by southern troops and sent to a prison.

After being released as a prisoner, Harry returned to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Then on June 1st 1862 Harry’s sister, Lucretia C. Hines, provided her consent as Henry’s mother, for Henry to enlist into the Union Forces. On June 9th 14 year old Harry enlisted into the 18th U.S. Infantry, by Captain P. R. Forney, in Lancaster. Harry was 4’ 111/2" tall with brown eyes, auburn hair, and light complexion when he enlisted for a three year service.

Harry was assigned as a drummer in the 3rd Battalion of Company “G”, 18th U. S. Infantry. In November 1864 he was transferred to the 2ndBattalion of Company ‘A”, 18th U.S. Infantry Regiment. Harry was discharged June 9th 1865 at (can’t read…Fort Kunt Mt. Plum).

-- During his time with Company A of the 18th U.S. regiment, Harry was a prisoner of war at the Confederate prison camp known as Libby prison for none months.

-- The National Archives could not locate his Civil War Pension Record, but I did create a timeline of his Civil War service, through the records of his different Army units.

-- I also located a photo of what a drummer boy might appear at about the same age as Harry.

Soon after his return from service, in early 1867, Henry was indicted on charges of burglary and larceny. He was given a 10 year sentence in the Lancaster prison. However, he may have not served his full 10-year sentence. By 1879 Harry had married Sarah A. Ferrier in Lancaster Pennsylvania.

-- Sarah was born February 11th 1861 to John Ferrier and Isabella Henry in Lancaster, Lancaster County Pennsylvania.

-- Sarah’s parents, John and Evelyn (Isabella) Ferrier, were sponsors of Sarah’s son, Frederick’s, baptism in Lancaster Pennsylvania on November 21st 1897. Together Harry and Sarah had three sons; John H., Lawrence, and Harry F. Hines.

Harry married Harriet (Hattie) Vitter Thomas on August 12th 1907 in Manhattan New York, New York.

-- When Harry and Hattie married in 1907, Paul was almost 4 years old, and Hattie was five months pregnant with Harry Jr.

-- Between 1903 and 1907 Hattie must have lived with her parents in East Mauch Chunk, Carbon County Pennsylvania.

-- Hattie was born June 6th 1882 in Mountain Top, Luzerne County Pennsylvania to Daniel Stewart Thomas, and Martha Jane Kishbaugh.
