Klinger ~ Kinter Families
-- My maternal grandparents were Edwin (Ed) Charles Klinger and Irene Mary Wrightstone.
-- All of the Klinger ~ Kinter research papers contain more details, and the Klinger family directory, and Kinter family directory, can be accessed to see even more.
We also have a Klinger ~ Kinter family photos.
During the mid to late 19th century my Arnold, Kinter, and Wrightstone families were farmers in the Northern York County Pennsylvania region of Franklin, Monaghan, Carroll, Warrington, and Washington Townships.
The edges of these townships are all within five miles of one another, and thirteen miles from the largest farmers market in the area, Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
It is in Harrisburg that my Klinger family worked as door to door sales, buyers, and distributors of produce and eggs. One census record even refered to the family as hucksters; people who sells small items, either door-to-door, or from a stall, or small store.
-- My grandpa Klinger's stories confirms this. That is was through this farming community relationship that his parens, my great grandparents, met and married. Edwin Charles Klinger and Irene Mary Wrightstone married, and their daughter, Dorothy Irene Klinger, is my mother. She married Robert Harvey Graham. That was a mistake.
-- Anyway, it may turn out that both Edwin and Irene are the great-great grandchildren of Valentine Kinter (1766-1814).
Here's how my grandpa and grandma Klinger are possible related.
It begins with my mother's Klinger relationship with the Kinter family of Carroll and Monaghan Townships in Norther York County, Pennsylvania.
My mother's grandpa, my great grandpa, was Charles Klinger, and his brother, Harry, married two Kitner sisters. Charles married Emma Kinter, and Harry married Emma's younger sister, Catherine. Both girls were born to Andrew George Kinter (1840-1915).
-- Andrew as born to David Kinter (1811-1884).
Then my mother's grandpa, my great grandpa, was Edwin Wrightstone, who married Hattie Amelia Arnold. Hattie was born to Luther H. Arnold and Annie Sollenberger. Luther was born to John Arnold and Harriett Kinter.
-- Harriet Kinter as born to Michael Kinter (1819-1888), and Mary R. Schriver.
David Kinter (1811-1884), and Michael Kinter (1819-1888) may be 2nd cousins, once removed. Meaning Michael's father, Jacob Kinter (1797-1854), and David Kinter (1811-1884) are brothers. And, they may both have been born to Valentine Kinter (1766-1814) and Magdalena Hoffman.
-- Even though we're not clear on the relationship between David Kinter (1811-1884) and Jacob Kinter (1797-1854). We do belive that these two men are sons of Valentine Kinter.
-- So, the Kinter families, and their relationship to my Wrightstone family, is still a work in progress.
However, I am confident of what follows is my Klinger ~ Kinter ancestors.
Johann Phillip Klinger (1723-1811)
-- My maternal 6th great grandparents were Johann Phillip Klinger and Eva Elizabeth Beilstein.
-- Our Klinger line traces it's roots to our Colonial patriarch Johann Phillip Klinger, whose ancestors can be traced back to the 16th century regions of Rielingshausen and Württemberg Germany. As it was in German naming traditions, their Christian name (1st given name) was not used, and the men went by their given (middle) name.
Johann Philip Klinger was born July 11th 1723 in Pfaffen Beerfurth, Odenwald, Hessen, Germany. He married Anna Marie.
Johann, his wife, and his brothers Alexander and Johann Peter Klinger were from Pfaffen-Beerfurth mountainous region of Odenwald, which is located in the of the Hessen state of Germany.
Johann and his brothers, Alexander and Johann Peter, immigrated from Wirtembergers near Erbach Germany to Colonial Pennsylvania on September 2nd 1749 on the ship "Albany" with Mr. Robert Brown as the Ship-Master from Rotterdam, last from Cowes with 285 passengers on board. The name on the passenger list was spelled as it appears; Klinger.
-- "...Both were the sons of Johann and Agatha Klinger living in Odenwald Hesse State, Phaffen-Beerfurth, Germany. Both Philip and Alexander were listed in the Revolutionary Records as: Private Philip (Johann), and Private Alexander Klinger serving under Lieutenant Spad's and Captain Sherman's Company which were the "early years" records of the Bergs Militia Guards of 1762..."
Philip and his brothers entered Colonial Philadelphia, and eventually migrated to the Reading area of present day Burks County, Pennsylvania. During the period leading up to the Revolutionary War Philip migrated west; living in and around the county boundaries separating Schuylkill, Dauphin, and Northumberland Pennsylvania.
A few family members settled the area know today as Klingertown in Upper Mahantango Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. This area of Schuylkill County borders Northern Dauphin County and Northumberland's southern boundary.
My Klinger families continue to live in and around Klingertown, and the region of North Dauphin County in the Townships of Upper Paxtang, Mifflin, Washington, Gratz, Wiconisco, and Lykens.
Johann Phillip Klinger and his first wife Anna Marie did arrive in Colonial Philadelphia and settled in the Reading area of Pennsylvania. It was here that Anna Marie died without bearing children.
Johann Philip then returned to Germany, and married his second wife, Eva Elizabeth Beilstein, on May 21st 1754 in Neunkirchen, in the Kreis District, in the middle of Saarland Germany. Eva was born on October 27th in Brandau Germany.
Johann Philip took up 1000 acres of land in what is now the neighborhood of Klinger's Church (Zion). He built his log home at the foot of the church hill south of the Mahantongo Mountain in what is now known as Lykens Valley.
The Klinger family donated the land for the church and cemetery. Johann Philip was 77 when the first church was built. Prior to the first church being built, they would have a few services each year at the church-house when the Preacher could make his journey "from a distance" into the valley. Alexander took up land east of Klingerstown in Mahantongo Valley.
Philip's first home in this area was around Pine Creek close to Klingertown. His sons and their families settled around what is now Klingerstown. But, as the story goes, the wilderness was too wild for Alexander and his wife so they left to go back to the Reading area where they lived the remainder of their lives. Both Alexander and his wife Anna Elizabeth are buried in Reading.
Johann Philip died on September 30th 1811 in Erdman, Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Charles Edwin Klinger (1853-1916)
-- My maternal 2nd great grandparents were Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. and Malinda Jane Daniels.
-- You'll have to read Charles Klinger's research papers to know more about his family
Charles Edwin Klinger Sr. was born April 1854 to John A. Klinger and Susanna Romberger in the area of Gratz, located in Lykens Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
During this time the town of Gratz was the largest town in the remote northern tip of Dauphin County. When Charles was six years old his family were living in the Millersburg area of Upper Paxtang Township, Dauphin County. A small town bordering the Susquehanna River. Charles's father was a miller for the local grain mill.
By 1870 the family moved to Lykens in Washington Township, bordering Mifflin Township near Berrysburg Dauphin County Pennsylvania.
While in the Lykens and Berrysburg area in 1873, 21 old Charles married 20 year old Malinda Jane Daniels. The Daniels family lived very close to Charles's family in Washington and Mifflin township borders, not far from Berrysburg. It is these areas were Charles and Malinda started their family.
>Malinda Jane Daniels was born July 1851 to Bennevelle (Benjamin) Daniels and Magdalena (Mary) Adams in Lykens Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania; most likely in and around this same northern area of Dauphin County.
Since as early as 1850, John's father worked in the milling trade, and as a farmer and farm laborer trades. Charles Sr. would follow as a laborer in these same trades, even briefly unemployed in 1880 as a coal miner. The family made their livelihood in and around the townships and towns that surrounded their family's roots.
Charles and Malinda lived in Lykens Borough area of Lykens Township Northern Dauphin County with their children Charles Jr., Ida Pearl, and William Elmer. The largest coal company in Lykens area of Wiconisco Township was the Lykens Valley Coal Company.
Shortly after 1880, Charles moved his family to Philadelphia, where their son Albert was born in 1883. By 1885 the family moved to Harrisburg Pennsylvania, where in February 1886 their son Harry would be born.
Charles's brother, John W. Klinger, was already in Harrisburg by 1877, and may have been the first Klinger from my mother's line to live in the city. No other Klinger was listed in the Harrisburg directories until Charles Sr. arrived in late 1885.
By 1886 Charles Sr. and his brother Jonas appeared in the Harrisburg directory. John W. Klinger suddenly drops off, and a Mary Klinger starts being listed, but I'm not sure who she is. The name, Jonas, also disappear in 1887, and a Mary continues to be listed. Mary may be a wife of John or Jonas.
These would be different times for Charles and Malinda. For a few years they lived at 7 Lochiel Street, so named for the Lochiel Iron Works located south of Harrisburg, just across the Steelton Borough line.
From 1892 to 1894 Charles Sr.'s family lived at 819 South Front Street Harrisburg, and he was still listed as a laborer. In 1893 Charles Jr. begins to be listed with his father, both as laborers. Charles Sr. is listed, and his son was listed as a (Jr.).
From 1895 to 1900 the Harrisburg directory listed a Charles E. Klinger and Sons, Charles Jr., Ida P., and William E. Klinger living at 124 Hanna Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Both father and son were listed as grocers at 126 Hanna Street, and William E. was listed as a driver. Charles and his son Charles Jr. had a small grocer at 126 Hanna Street in Harrisburg, which was next door to their home at 124 Hanna Street. The homes located at 124 and 126 Hanna Street is in present day Shipoke of South Harrisburg Pennsylvania. In 1960 homes in the Shipoke area were demolished for the Interstate 83 2nd and front street ramps. The homes of 124 and 126 Hanna Street were demolished, and would have been located near the railroad tracks.
Living with Charles and Malinda in 1900 were Charles Jr., his wife Emma and their six year old daughter Ethel. Also living with Charles Sr. and Malinda were their sons Albert, Harry, and James, who were listed as attending school. Both Charles Sr. and Jr. worked with fruits and produce, listed in a census record as a "green grocer.".
The family lived on Hanna Street until about 1904, when Charles Jr. began working as a confectioner and living away from his parents. Charles Sr. began working as a laborer for a local Iron Company. By 1910 Charles was in Los Angeles California living in a boarding home, while he continued to work as an iron worker. Malinda was living with Albert and his family. In the 1910 census Malinda identified herself as a widow. I'm not certain why Charles and Malinda were not living together. In 1912 Charles Sr. was back in Harrisburg working as a salesman, and he continued to not live with Malinda.
Malinda and her youngest children had moved in with her son Albert J. Klinger and his new wife at 403 Vernon Street Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Malinda lived with Albert to about 1916, when she moved in with another son Harry and his wife.
Charles Klinger Sr. died November 14th 1916, and was laid to rest in the Paxtang Cemetery, Plot: Hillside Lawn SG, Dauphin County Pennsylvania.
Malinda continued to live with Harry at both Brook Street and Swatara Streets until about 1936. At this time she moved in with another son William. It was in William'WWI draft registration that he referred to Malinda as Linda. Malinda lived with William and his wife at 414 Buckhorn St. Harrisburg from 1936 to 1941. William died in 1944.
Malinda died August 10th 1941 at 90 years old. She is laid to rest at the Paxtang Cemetery, Plot: Terrace Lawn #34, Paxtang, Dauphin County Pennsylvania.
Most of the children lived on Allison Hill area of Harrisburg Pennsylvania: South of Derry Street and North of Berryhill Street, between Crescent and 17th Streets of Harrisburg. Known addresses include: Crescent Street, Nectarine Street, Swatara Street, Brook Street, Berryhill Street, and Buckhorn Street.

Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. (1874-1927)
-- My maternal great grandparents were Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. and Emma Long Kinter.
-- This is Charles Jr.'s research paper where you'll find much more information on this large family.
Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. was born on April 8th 1874 to Charles Klinger Sr. and Melinda Daniels in Lykens, Wiconisco Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Charles was of medium height and build, with blue eyes and brown hair. On January 5th 1899, at age 24, Charles married 24 year old Emma Long Kinter. The marriage was conducted by Alexander Lamberson in Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
Emma was also known as Emmy, and she was born March 17th 1873 to Andrew G. Kinter and Matilda Elizabeth Huss in Dillsburg York County Pennsylvania. Emma's sister was Kate M. Kinter who married Charles's younger brother, Harry Victor Klinger, in 1916.
In 1900 Charles and Emma lived with his parents on Hanna Street in what is known today as Shipoke Area of South Harrisburg Pennsylvania. Some of this area is currently the front street on ramp and 2nd street off ramp interchange to Interstate 83.
By 1910 the family moved to 119 Vine Street, a few blocks north from Hanna Street, off South 2nd and South 3rd Streets. Charles Jr. and Emma were living with Emma’s father Andrew Kinter who is widowed at 60 years old.
Emma's sister, Kate Kinter, is also living with the family in 1910, and in 1916 Kate marries Harry Klinger, Charles's young brother. The Kitner family is from the Dillsburg area of York County Pennsylvania. I can only assume that Emma's father, Andrew, had some sort of relationship with Charles who was in the fruits and produce business.
According to the Klinger family, Charles at about 30 years old worked on the newly built Pennsylvania Capitol Building Dome. Construction of the Capitol building began with ground breaking on November 2nd 1902, and ending with its dedication on October 4th 1906. On Charles WWI Draft registration card, he indicated he was a produce dealer working for H. R. Whitcomb, located on Chestnut Street Market House, Harrisburg.
Between 1920 and 1927 Charles and Emma lived on South Court Street, further north from Vine Street.
On October 6th 1927 at 9:25 P.M, at 53 years old, Charles E. Klinger Jr. died at the Policlinic Hospital Harrisburg Pennsylvania of pulmonary tuberculosis.
That same year his daughter Helen M. Klinger died at 21 years old. They are both buried together in the Paxtang Cemetery Harrisburg PA, row 14, stone #7. The circumstances seem to reflect they both died at the exact same date, maybe having the same cause of death.
After 1927, Emma, Alma, Pansey, and Clarence began living with Emma's oldest daughter, Ethel L. Stephens at 84 Luce Street Harrisburg. During Emma's later years, along with her daughter Pansey, they worked for the McCormick's at their 101 North Front Street Mansion in Harrisburg, living in the rear of the mansion as a domestic servant.
The last McCormick son to live at the mansion was Donald McCormick, who also served as president of Dauphin Deposit Bank. Upon Donald's death in 1945, the house was willed to the Harrisburg Public Library. Emma left her employment and moved in with her youngest daughter Pansey and her husband Elmer Dorer.
They lived at 2314 Berry Hill Street, Allison Hill Harrisburg Pennsylvania, until about the mid 1960's when Emma moved into the Dauphin County Home.
Emma died at the age of 98 in September 1971,while living in the Dauphin County Home in Swatara Township Dauphin County Pennsylvania. Emma was laid to rest in the Paxtang Cemetery Harrisburg Pennsylvania.
Charles Edwin Klinger Jr. and Emma Long Kitner had six children.

iii. Helen M. Klinger (1906-1927)
iv. Alma R. Klinger (1908-1994)

On April 3rd 1930 Ed and Irene lived in Shiremanstown Borough, Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. At that time Ed work as a laborer in a brickyard.
-- This may be how Ed met his wife Irene Mary Wrightstone, who at this time was living on a farm in Lemoyne Borough, Lower Allen Township Cumberland County; directly across the Susquehanna River on either the Walnut Street or Market Street Bridges. Her father was a tenet farmer, and I suspect they either sold fruit or produce to Charles and Sons green grocers of the Shipoke area of Harrisburg.
-- I recall driving with him, and he showed me the brickyard which was in ruins, and located at the intersection of present day Elmerton Avenue and PA State Route 22, adjacent to the Pennsylvania State Veterinarian Lab.
-- I remember Grandpa telling me stories of his younger days, and his family.
