Arnold Family History

-- There's mpore to rear on the Arnold family in my research papers.

-- My mother was Dorothy Irene Klinger, and her grandparents were Edwin Underwood Wrightstone and Hattie Amelia Arnold.

-- I think the Wrightstone ~ Arnold photo collection, and Sollenberger ~ Diller ~ Bentz collection are the largest in or library.

Hattie was born to Annie Mary Sollenberger and Luther H. Arnold.

Although Annie and Luther never married, our lineage is biologically connected to Luther's Colonial Pennsylvania and German Arnold families.

Much of what we found on Luther's line prior to his parents, John Arnold and Harriett Kinter, has not been accurately or properly documented. We believe that the Arnold Colonial Pennsylvania patriarch is Peter Arnold (1732-1795), who is most likely of German origins.

Peter Arnold (1732 - 1795)

-- My maternal 5th great grandparents: Peter Arnold and Anna Margreth (Margaret).

-- This is the specific Peter Arnold research paper

Johann Peter Arnold was born about 1732 in Germany. Peter arrived on the ship Neptune in Colonial Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 24th 1751 with Johann Lutwig Horing (Herring). It can't be determined if Peter's father or brothers where in Colonial Pennsylvania.

Peter married Anna Margreth (Margaret) about 1755 while living in Colonia Pennsylvania. Anna Margaret was born about 1735.

Peter and Margaretha Arnold's 1st daughter, Catherine, was baptized and sponsored by Ludwig Herring (Horing) and wife, on February 1st 1756 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Red Hill, Philadelphia County, present day Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Ludwig Hering knew Peter Arnold, and supports the notion that they both came to Colonial Philadelphia on the ship, Neptune, on September 24th 1751. Whether they knew one another from their German origins, or met while on the ship isn't known. However they met, Peter Arnold and Ludwig Hering were friends, and probably neighbors while living in present day Montgomery County Pennsylvania.

In 1755 Peter and Anna lived in Red Hill in present day Upper Hanover Township, Montgomery County. Then by 1757 they moved to the Old Zionsville area of Lower Macungie Township, Northampton County (present day Lehigh County), Pennsylvania. In 1763 the family had moved to the Warrington Township area of York County Pennsylvania.

In 1764 Peter purchased land in York County from Michael Torerbaugh and at that time was located in Huntington Township, which is in present day Adams County, Pennsylvania. Four of their younger children were baptized at the Lower Bermudian Church, which was part of Warrington Township, York County, which in present day Latimore Township, Adams County.

-- Interestingly, I currently live about three miles from the church.

In 1765 Peter was on the communion list for the Lower Bermudian Church, and where he served as deacon in 1769. Previous to 1770, a small section of Warrington extended south of the Conewago and gave rise to disputes and inconvenience.

-- The Conewago and the Bermudian formed the dividing line between the early settlements of the Quakers and Germans, consequently, a petition, dated the fourth month, twenty-fourth day, 1770, asked the court to establish a definite boundary, conceding the "little"; corner to Dover Township.

--  The petition was granted. The small tract mentioned is located a short distance below the "stone bridge". It included only a few farms at the bend of the stream.

From 1779 to 1781 Peter was listed on the Monaghan Township, York County, Pennsylvania tax list.

Peter died in 1795 while living in Warrington Township, York County. Anna died after 1801 in Warrington Township, York County.

Peter's estate will was dated February 1st 1793, and proved March 6th 1795. His executors were his trusty friends Andrew Roose and Elihu Underwood Esquire.

Peter's will was signed, and witnessed by Jacob Cook and Peter's son, Peter Arnold. An inventory of Peter's estate was filed in York County March 26th 1796.

In addition to listing all his personal property, it specified specifies bonds and notes owed to him. Peter had been generous to his children who owed him a total of some eight pounds.

The entire estate was valued at 184.9.4 pounds. Documents filed in 1801 in York County show that, with consent of the widow and heirs, the farm was sold to David McMillan for the sum of 1,100 pounds. Prior to that time, Peter's son, Nicholas, had sold his share of the estate to John George (1795) as did his brothers and sisters in 1799. Therefore, John George and his mother would have profited from the sale.

Peter and Anna had nine children.

John Arnold (1835 - 1918)

-- My maternal 2nd great grandparents: John Arnold and Harriet Kinter.

-- This is the specific Samuel Arnold research paper

John Arnold was born March 1835 to Samuel Arnold and Marie Lau in Franklin Township York County Pennsylvania. Samuel Arnold's grandfather was Peter Arnold (1732-1795)

John married Harriet Kinter about 1853. Harriett was born 1835 to Michael Kinter and Mary R Schriver.

John was a carpenter and farmer. The family lived on present day Hickory Road, just off Mountain Road, Franklin Township York County Pennsylvania.

John and his neighbor, Samuel Diller, where warrantees for property, dated May 29th1868, which they warranted to Robert Neil on June 8thh 1868.
,br> The original warrant for the land was dated October 28th 1757.

-- Samuel Diller is the grandfather of Annie Mary Sollenberger, who had a daughter to John's son, Luther H. Arnold.

Harriett died 1892, and John remarried to Lovina N. Brougher-Gusler on March 16th 1893 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

-- Lovina was previously married about 1872 and she had one child, Ida F. Gusler, who was born about 1878. Lovina was born March 1853 in Pennsylvania to Samuel Brougher and Lydia Lauck.

-- In 1880 Lovina was living with her parents.

In 1880 Oliver, Mary, and Hezekiah were not living with John and Rebecca. Michael and Susanna Kinter, Rebecca's parents were living next door.

In 1910 John and Lovina a 19 year old nephew, Iva D. Brougher, was living with them.

Lovina died in 1917, and John in 1918. They were both laid to rest next to John's 1st wife, Harriett, in the Dillsburg Cemetery, Dillsburg, York County.

Together John Arnold and Harriett Kinter had six children.

vi. Samuel M. Arnold (1870-1937).

Luther Henry Arnold (1868-1931)

-- My maternal 2nd great grandparents: Luther Henry Arnold and Anna Mary Sollenberger.

-- Luther and Annie Sollenberger never married.

-- The Sollenberger family home was about 3/4 of a mile from the Arnold home. Both families belonged to the same farm community and attended the same church, which sits about 3 miles west from the borough of Dillsburg.

-- The church was formed in 1868 and built by Anna’s grandfather, Samuel Diller, and Luther’s father John Arnold who was a carpenter.

-- Besides attending the same church as Annie, Luther most likely worked on the Sollenberger and Diller farms. In the fall of 1882, Anna was eighteen years old and Luther was 14 years old working as a farm laborer in the local area.

-- On June 7th 1883, my great grandmother, Hattie Amelia Arnold, was born to Anna Sollenberger. Then on September 28th 1883 Annie and her father, Jacob M. Sollenberger, filed a charge against Luther for the York County docket, case #041.

--  The charge against, the now, 15-year-old Luther H. Arnold was for fornication and bastardy.

-- When you read through the papers, there appears to be more to the relationship between Annie and Luther. Age is most likely the reason they did not marry.

-- Anna and her daughter Hattie lived with Anna’s parents on South Mountain Road until Anna married Tobias Bentz on March 18th1890.

-- This is the specific Luther Arnold research paper

-- Anna Mary Sollenberger was born November 27th 1864 to Jacob M. Sollenebrger (1832-1899), and Mary Ann Diller.

-- This is the specific Jacob Sollenberger research paper

-- This is the only photo I have of Luther Arnold and his family.

When Luther was 25 years old he married 28 year old Rebecca E. Pipher on March 16th 1893 at the St James Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gettysburg Adams County Pennsylvania. Rebecca was born in 1863 to John and Maria Pipher.

The March 16th 1893 marriage application indicated that Luther was a blacksmith living in Dillsburg Pennsylvania, and Rebecca lived in Allen (present day Churchtown) Cumberland County. However, on their March 16th 1893 church record of their marriage in Adams County, Luther listed his residence as Cumberland County Pennsylvania, most likely in the Monroe Township, Churchtown area.

We believe Luther was living with his parents on the Arnold Home outside Dillsburg, and intended to live in the Monroe Township of Cumberland County area. We also believe that Luther worked in this Monroe Township area since the late 1880 time frame.

By 1900 Luther and his family were living in Monroe Township Cumberland County Pennsylvania. Rebecca indicated she had five children, who were still living. On the 1910 census Rebecca indicated she had seven children, and they were still living.

It appears that Annie E. Arnold, listed in the 1900 census as a daughter, was born out of wedlock, possible not to Luther.

Luther died in 1931, and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, located in Churchtown Cumberland County Pennsylvania.

Rebecca died in 1935, and was buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, located in Churchtown Cumberland County.

Luther and Rebecca had eight children.

i. Annie E. Arnold was born August 25th 1890. She died unmarried at age 99, August 22nd 1989 in Cumberland County.

ii. Mary E. Arnold was born July 12th 1893 in Carlisle Cumberland County.

iii. Raymond Luther Arnold was born January 23rd 1896 in Monroe Township, Cumberland County.

iv. Helen Arnold (b.1899). At 19 years old Helen married 26 year old Joseph A. Moorehead on March 26th 1918 in Carlisle Cumberland County.

v. Evelyn (Eva) Arnold was born April 1900. At 22 years old, Evelyn married 20 year old Lester D. Sonder on November 7th 1922 in Cumberland County.
