Some digital scans were made in black and white, while others were scanned to show their original appearance in color and current condition. If there was anything written anywhere on the front or back of the photo, it will be recorded in the photo descriptions described below. Knowing the photographer of a particular photo allows us to help date the photo. However, unless known, photo dates are estimates (c-circa) based on a number of factors; knowing a person and estimating their age in the photos, clothing styles, photographic techniques, etc.

Tobias and Anna Bentz Family Photos

Tobias Bentz was married twice. His 1st wife, Alice Barbara Sollenberger died in 1887. He then married Anna Solleberger in 1890.

Tobias and Alice had five children.

i.    Berta A. Bentz was born 1875 and died in 1878.

ii.   Albert Earl Bentz was born in 1878. He married Hettie Culberson.

iii.  Gertrude V. Bentz was born March 1881. She married Harry Burgard on June 25th 1903.

iv.   Laura V. Bentz was born October 1879. She married Joseph H. Smith April 19th 1898.

v.    William Michael Bentz was born and died June 2nd 1887.

Alice died in 1887, and Tobias Bentz married Annie Sollenberger in 1890. Together, Tobias and Anna had two children.

vi.   Nettie A. Bentz was born September 4th 1890. She married Roy Firestone March 29th 1908.

vii.  Margaret L. Bentz was born on August 15th 1905. She married Samuel Henry Sweigert Jr. August 30th 1929.

GB (01) The Bentz Family Farm: George Bentz and Nancy Grove, GB (00A), built their home in 1849 and a barn in 1863. The photograph was located in the back of Dale Bentz's book "Reflections on a Lifetime", of the house in an earlier era. The farm is located on Crane Road, which is connected to Dabin Road off route 74 south of Dillsburg Pennsylvania. This is an 1876 map of where the farm is, and this is an 2002 photo of the farm.

MB (01C) 1900 – Tobias Bentz and his family on the family farm. This is a close up of Tobias. Notice the open air pockets on the in the sides of the barn.

MB (00) This photo was in Margaret Bentz's photo collection with other Bentz and Sollenebrger photos, which is why I believe the is a photo of a Bentz or Sollenberger family member. I will continue my research into this photo.

•     Here are three close ups of the people in the photo: 1st the older man, and then there's the group of people to the left of the photo, and then the group of people in front of the house.

•     The photo is a late 19th, or early 20th, century color photo, which may have been taken by Percy Wrightstone. Percy was a photographer working during the late 19th and early 20th century. Other than being very well preserved, there was no indication of who is in the photo or any markings on the backing of the photo.

•     In the Northern Your County Historical Society, there is a hand painting of the Alexander Underwood farm, which is a remarkable resemblance to this photo. This is a similar sketch TG (00) of the Alexander Underwood Farm, which was located in Carroll Township near the Monaghan Township line, between Siddonsburg and Dillsburg in the Northern York County area of Pennsylvania.

•     Our great-grandfather, Edwin Underwood Wrightstone, married Hattie Amelia Arnold. Hattie’s mother was Annie Sollenberger, and when Hattie was 10 years old, Annie married Tobias Bentz. Annie and Tobias are Margaret Bentz’s parents.

•     Here is another photo taken by Percy, MPW (01C), which we believe is a photo of his brother Edwin Underwood Wrightstone, behind the plow. MPW (01B) is the back of the photo. Edwin was born to Michael Wrightstone and Eliza J. Kline.

•     After Michael mustered out of the 166th Pennsylvania Regiment in 1863, he went to work for the Caleb and Elizabeth Underwood family, and Caleb’s brother John Underwood was a neighbor. While living with the Underwood’s Michael meets and marries Eliza Jane Kline. After they married they moved into their own farm in Monaghan Township, outside Siddonsburg, which was about fives miles from the Underwood farms.

MB (01A) Margret Bentz’s grandmother, Susannah Heiges (Heikes), who married Michael Bentz. Their son was Tobias Bentz, Margaret’s father. MB (01B) is a close up of Susan, and MB (01AB) is the back of the photo.

MB (02) Margaret Bentz was born August 15th 1905. MB (02A) is the original photo, and MB (02AB) is the back of the photo.

MB (07) This is a photo of the 1911-1912 Mt. TB (06) Written on the back of the photo, Gertie Burguard: Tobias's daughter with his 1st wife, Alice B. Sollenberger.

TB (06B) Hand written on a piece of paper taped to the back of the photo was written: Evelyn Burgard Myers. I'm not sure about Myers, possable her married name, but the photo is of Gertie Bentz-Burgurad's daughter, Evelyn M. Burguard. Also, here are photos TB (13A) and TB (07D).

TB (07B) The photo shows Harry, Evelyn M. and Clare B., and Gertie Bentz-Burguard. TB (07C) is the back of the photo post card sent from Harry Burguard on October 1908 from Siddonsburg to his father in-law, Tobias Bentz in Wellsville Post Office area, Warrington Township; Harry married Tobias's daughter Gertrude.

TB (07D) This is Evelyn and Robert Burgard; the children of Gertrude Bentz-Burgard, Hattie's Step Sister; the photo was most likely taken about 1920 at the Burgard home in Monaghan Township York County.

TB (07E) This is a hand written note by Irene Wrightstone: My friend, Evelyn, with Robert Lee and Buster-the-Pony.

TB (12) Margaret Bentz

TB (12A) Left is Irene Wrightstone and right is Margaret Bentz; Irene's mother Hattie, is Margaret's half sister; known as uterine siblings; sharing the same mother. Irene and Margaret both share a relationship to Hattie's mother Anna Sollenberger-Bentz, and her parents Jacob and Mary Sollenberger. This makes Irene a first cousin once removed of Margaret Bentz. Their closeness makes them plain old cousins. TB (12B) This is the same photo as TB (12A), but with another girl who is a girlfriend or relative.

TB (13) This photo was taken about 1920 maybe 1921, with cousins. The mountains in the background appear to be the same contours as the ones in the Sollenberger reunion, which was held off Mountain Road Dillsburg PA. TB (13A) has names imposed on the photo.

•     Evelyn Burgard is the daughter of Gertie Bentz-Burgard; Evelyn would be 15 years old in 1920. Gertie is Hattie Wrightstone's step sister. I also suspect that Gertie's son Clare is also in the photo, who would be 13 years old. Given this lead, then the other children could be Nettie Bentz-Firestone's daughter Gertrude. Nettie is Hattie's half sister. Margaret Bentz is Hattie's other half sister. The four older boys could be related to the Sollenberger familes.

TB (14A) Written on the back of the photo: 2 women and man that Grandpa Bentz brought over to Eberley farm to visit. TB (14B) This is a close up of the people. The Eberley farm was located in Hampton Township, which Edwin and Hattie would have been at from the early 1920's to the late 1930's. I don’t know who wrote on the picture, but the guy resembles a young Ed Klinger.
